What is an Electronic Signature?
An electronic signature (e-signature) is any electronic symbol, process, or sound attached to a document that a person adopts with the intent to sign. This can be a typed name, a drawn signature on a touchscreen, or an uploaded image of your handwritten signature. E-signatures are widely accepted for most business and legal documents.
Are Electronic Signatures Legal in Ontario & Canada?
Yes. Electronic signatures are legally valid in Canada under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and in Ontario under the Electronic Commerce Act, 2000. Most contracts, leases, and agreements can be signed electronically. Some exceptions exist for wills, powers of attorney, and certain real estate documents that require wet-ink signatures.
